New version of<\/strong> CTFL v4.0 syllabus<\/h2>\n

Software testing is a field that is constantly evolving, changing with the development of technology, the emergence of new ideas, practices and trends in the IT world. New generations of testers use to a large extent different sources of knowledge than their predecessors – specialized guides, courses, tutorials are available at every step, more and more dispersed and offered in various forms. However, these sources must undergo frequent updates and the knowledge contained in them may quickly become outdated and require re-exploration, already in a refreshed form corresponding to reality.<\/p>\n

Does the same pace of change apply to the absolute foundation in testing education, which is the ISTQB\u00ae Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) syllabus? It turns out that in this case, too, we are dealing with a change. And so, by the decision of the ISTQB\u00ae General Assembly, which took place in Wroc\u0142aw in April this year, a new version of the syllabus, CTFL v4.0, was approved, which entered into force in May.<\/p>\n

Of course, changing the version of the syllabus does not result in the immediate end of the validity of the previous version. The CTFL v3.1 syllabus continues to serve as the basis for the certification exam, but the final expiration date has been set. And so, the exam in English based on version 3.1 will be available until May 9, 2024.<\/strong> In the case of the Polish language, the final date is November 9, 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What is the change?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to ISTQB\u00ae Chairman Olivier Denoo, the new version of the syllabus is not just an update, or a mix of content already existing in the Foundation and Agile syllabuses, but a complete redesign integrating the unchanging fundamentals of testing with the latest agile elements, further enriched with current trends to better prepare for \u201etesting the future\u201d. As he mentioned, this is to be a change that the ISTQB\u00ae CTFL has not experienced in over 20 years of existence.<\/p>\n

Other high-ranking representatives of the organization also point out that in these times, when the iterative model of software development has become dominant (although still not ubiquitous), it was necessary to significantly strengthen the emphasis of this approach in the document desired to be a compass for those involved in testing. In accordance with these intentions, the test activities described in the syllabus more than before focus on team collaboration, and the entire document is intended to serve as an aid to agile transformation.<\/p>\n

The proof of how strongly the new version of the ISTQB\u00ae CTFL syllabus is related to everything that could be found in the ISTQB\u00ae – Agile Tester document so far, is the fact that trainers who want to conduct training for version 4.0 must be authorized to both of these certificates.<\/p>\n

<\/blockquote>\n

Does it really seem like such a sygnificant change after reading the syllabus? Let’s look at this issue. <\/strong><\/h2>\n

At first glance, you can see that the size of the document has been reduced. The previous version had 93 pages, the new one is only 74, a large part of which is Business Outcomes traceability matrix with Learning Objectives \u2013 a list where you can find direct links between the 14 expected business benefits of learning and the individual chapters of the document and the skills assigned to them.<\/p>\n

The limitation of the material manifests itself, among others, in the resignation from some examples to the discussed issues. The document itself states that the responsibility for visualizing and practicing these issues is transferred to the trainers conducting the training.<\/p>\n

It is clear that a lot of emphasis has been placed on issues related to agility. But it is not everything. The most important changes compared to version 3.1 are described below (source Appendix C – Release Notes):<\/p>\n

  • In Chapter 1 (Fundamentals of Testing), a new section has been added describing the whole team’s approach to testing.<\/strong> The section on preferred testing skills has been expanded and improved.<\/li>\n
  • Chapter 2 (Testing Throughout the SDLCs)<\/strong> introduces and expands sections on early testing practice (more coverage of Test Driven Development and shift-left approaches, addition of a brand new DevOps and Testing section). The presentation of practices summarizing the iterations consisted in adding a separate part devoted to the Retrospective and emphasizing the advantages of organizing such meetings.<\/li>\n
  • In Chapter 3<\/strong> (Static testing<\/strong>), the entire section describing the techniques for conducting the Review has been dropped.<\/li>\n
  • In Chapter 5 (Managing the Test Activities)<\/strong>, the section on test strategies has been removed. Instead, a separate section for collaborative testing is created. It consists of 3 elements: Collaborative writing of user stories, Acceptance Criteria and Software Development based on Acceptance Tests. In the area of white-box testing, decision testing was changed to branch testing (“decisions” gave rise to numerous misunderstandings and interpretation problems), and the section on the benefits of using structure-based techniques was expanded.<\/li>\n
  • In Chapter 5 (Managing the Test Activities)<\/strong>, the section on test strategies has been removed. The issue of estimating test effort was developed by listing several new estimation techniques. In addition, concepts and tools related directly to Agile in test management were discussed: iteration and release planning, test pyramid and test quadrants.   • In Chapter 6 (Testing Tools)<\/strong>, most of the material has been removed, leaving only a list presenting the different types of test supporting tools and a section on the risks and benefits of test automation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The new ISTQB certification path familiarizes you with testing in agile methodologies<\/h2>\n

    Looking through the new document, you really get the impression that it is closer to reality than previous versions. Agile definitely comes to the fore, it is no longer the “alternative approach” mentioned here and there, but a fully-fledged way of implementing testing activities. In comparative reading, there was also the impression of simplification and condensation of the material. The lack of prolixity and the clear structure of the presented content seem to be what, in the common opinion, could be considered as going with the times. And since we are talking about changes of this magnitude in the very foundation of the ISTQB\u00ae certification path, it was a bold and probably necessary step.<\/p>\n

    People who decide to pass the certificate under the new version will become better acquainted with the elements of testing in agile methodologies than their predecessors. However, the introduction of additional terms to remember is compensated by numerous deletions of content whose usefulness at this level of certification has raised reasonable doubts.<\/p>\n
